Migrating contacts from Nokia to Blackberry

There are plenty of entries in state of the art search engines like Google with the string above. Seems to be a quite common issue, when moving from a different vendor to Blackberry.

As I was in a similar position recently, moving from an old some (but still working) Nokia E61 device (no. not the E61i) to the new company standard Blackberry 9700, also known as „Bold“. Presuming that there ar industry wide standards available for sharing contact details in a well defined format like vCard, this should not be a big game.

Failed.

It took me quite a while, more precisely half a day and a couple of reboots on my incredible slow laptop to finally figure out a working solution. And despite the resources on the web, this solution prooved to work – I swear.

Here’s what you need to clone my process

Just the installation of the software takes at least three reboots. So be prepared. At least the software is free of charge, except for Outlook of course. Did not try it wiht Outlook Express, maybe it’s working their as well. MS Outlook is just needed, cause neither Nokia’s nor BB’s software talk a common language, beside of exchanging data through MS Outlook. A kind of least common denominator…

Processing…

Follow exactly the steps below to succeed:

  1. Install software
  2. Start Nokia PC Suite application
  3. Connect Nokia phone to Laptop, select PC Suite mode on phone
  4. Check, if the phone has been recognized, otherwise unplug and plug again
  5. Start the synchronize application
  6. Click on Settings
  7. Select contact entries only
  8. In the advanced screen check to sync only in direction from phone to Outlook
  9. Start synchronization
  10. Start MS Outlook to check whether contacts have been imported. If not, retry again with step 1.

Half of the road has been mastered…

  1. Connect BB via USB cable to your Laptop
  2. Start BB Desktop manager
  3. Select data synchronization
  4. Select to configure synchronization
  5. Select address book / contacts and enable one way sync
  6. On your BB open contacts and disable wireless sync in options menu
  7. Back in the PC application select the two upper options in the synchronization screen and click the button to start syncing…
  8. Check on the phone, all contacts should have been imported

Alternative

Code your own data conversion hack or use Noki. They at least promise you to have a solution, however they want to have a few bucks if you want to migrate a huge bunch of data.

Feedback is appreciated, support is none. Sorry, I’m a user not a interested in the mess BB and Nokia are providing….
